Gerald Gardner's Book of Shadows delineates eight different methods of creating magick. The fourth path, "Incense, Drugs, Wine, etc.," which could collectively be called "Intoxicants," involves the use of any external substance to change consciousness. This includes everything from aromatherapy, to inhaled scents such as incense and smudging, to the use of herbs, drugs, alcohol, hallucinogens, and poisons and toxins.
